Showcasing Start Fund Learning Grant case studies

The Start Fund Learning Grant is a small grant window of the Start Fund to support evidence and learning initiatives for its funded responses. One per cent (1%) of Start Fund annual disbursement is earmarked for this grant.

We have selected four case studies from the year 2018 and 2019 to share with our members at the forthcoming members’ webinar to facilitate broader learning and dissemination across the Start Network membership. Use of data and technology to strengthen humanitarian coordination; good practices and challenges around accountability and feedback mechanisms; and lessons on protection components of the Start Fund programmes are the key themes of these case studies.

CAFOD and partners will present the findings and reflection from their report, a Pan-India Study on the Existing Mechanisms of Ensuring Accountability to the Affected Population in India: Experiences from Emergency Responses in the Assam, Odisha, and Kerala. (Alert 252 and 278 India, flooding).

Using Alert 280 and 281, a displacement-related response in Guatemala and Mexico, World Vision, and partners will share their reflection on piloting a new digital method of data collection to improve data collection in Casa del Migrante and other similar shelters to strengthen the humanitarian response.

Christian Aid with partners will present a web application developed to collect information on humanitarian interventions in 10 States in Nigeria and the capacity building initiatives for the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on the use of the web application to strengthen coordination between the humanitarian actors. Alert 248 Nigeria (displacement due to violence).

Using Alert 310, Flood Response in Malawi as a case study, Trócaire, and partners will discuss the protection component of the Start programme and present a gender perspective towards cash assistance.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

The discussion will be facilitated by Chaitali Chattopadhyay, Start Funds, MEAL Manager.
