Meeting of the Comprehensive Risk Management Technical Expert Group
Start Network will be attending the first meeting of the UN Climate Change Technical Expert Group on Comprehensive Risk Management taking place in Bonn Germany on the 29 & 30 August 2019.
In April 2019, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's (UNFCCC) Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage invited the Start Network to join the Technical Expert Group on Comprehensive Risk Management (CRM). To participate in this group, Start Network decided to find a representative from the membership (as several members are already closely involved in the UNFCCC process) and Aparna Shrivastava (Climate Finance Lead, Mercy Corps) is the chosen representative. Please see the final composition of the CRM Technical Expert Group.
On August 29 & 30, the Technical Expert Group will meet for the first time in Bonn, Germany to discuss the following:
- UNFCCC process on the Warsaw International Mechanism and outputs to date, and its work-plan
- Introduction of experts, a stocktake of their work on relevant topics to the work-plan
- Potential contributions from experts and available resources.
The meeting is expected to plan of work of the Techincal Expert Group and agree on the plan for future meetings.
This is a unique opportunity to influence a UN FCCC-level mechanism that is a key reference for governments around the world in dealing with the impacts of climate change. There are multiple documents that will be updated or drafted from scratch based on the Technical Expert Group's input and there will also be opportunities to improve upon the UNFCCC's existing knowledge platform on risk transfer. Though the Executive Committee is focused specifically on Loss and Damage, our involvement in the group allows us to be directly tied into UNFCCC processes and build a reputation for Start Network (and MercyCorps as part of the network) at a global level.
