Governance and assurance

We are committed to ensuring the highest standards of transparency, accountability and competent management over the public funds programmed through our member organisations and partners.

Start Network is a company and charity registered in England and Wales with company registration number 09286835 and charity registration number 1159483.

Governed by our members

Our members play a central role in our governance and decision making.

Our membership, represented by the Assembly, meets annually to help shape Start Network’s strategic direction. All members have equal voting rights, unless there are multiple members of the same NGO family, in which case they have one collective vote.

The Start Network’s Board of Trustees is legally responsible for the charity and makes most decisions, but it is accountable to the Assembly.

Members can be involved in decision making at many levels:

  • All member organisations have a representative on the Assembly.
  • Members make up 60% of our Board of Trustees.
  • Members can be part of the Board’s advisory sub-committees.
