Climate Change

Climate change is affecting the way we respond to humanitarian crises. Extreme weather events have become more frequent and intense, pushing actors to shift towards innovative and anticipatory approaches to the climate emergency.

The United Nations Climate Change Conferences happen each year and serve as the formal meeting of UNFCCC parties, a space for negotiations on climate goals, and a global forum for multilateral discussions on matters related to climate change.

This year’s conference – COP29 – is the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties and will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11-22 November 2024

Start Network first attended a COP event in 2021 (COP26) and has been an observer organisation since 2022 (COP27), with the following aims:

  • To highlight the humanitarian impacts of the climate crisis and demonstrate the need for humanitarian actors to better coordinate with climate actors;
  • To encourage more humanitarian actors to be a part of the climate conversation;
  • To share learning from the humanitarian sector’s experience responding to immediate and urgent situations and how this can be applied to the climate sector given increasing climate emergency situations.

This year, Start Network will be sharing messages in the lead-up to COP29 and also participating in the event in November. Check back here for more information on our engagement in COP29 as we get closer to the event.
