Start Network is delighted to announce that the successful partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands is due to continue, with just over £12million GBP  allocated for the next three and a half years.

The recent open call for funding applications by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands asked organisations to demonstrate how they would support equal partnerships, increased local representation and further anticipatory action.

The new agreement will see the Dutch government fund three distinct areas of work for Start Network;

  • Global Start Fund and Start Fund Bangladesh - focusing on local leadership and on the growing number of anticipatory alerts that are responded to particularly with regards to conflict.
  • Hub development – building the capacity of our hubs to promote local leaders, advocate for change and to bring new, innovative ideas to the table.
  • New ways of working – exploring innovations for the humanitarian system and contributing to organisational strengthening

Through this new funding agreement, the Netherlands is reaffirming its commitment to supporting a more equal system of humanitarian support, with a focus on increasing the decision-making role of local actors.

In addition, the funding allocated to both Start Fund and Start Fund Bangladesh includes provision for increased anticipatory action, specifically for human-induced crises. By dedicating resources to crisis anticipation, there is increased capacity to act in advance of potential armed conflicts and minimise negative impacts to communities.

We are very excited to be working with the Dutch government over the coming four years on enabling further local actors to take the lead when it comes to decision making and delivering locally led action. This grant is truly pushing forward key aspects of our strategy around capacity strengthening, advocacy, exploring further anticipatory action for conflict and looking shifting mindsets from risk transferring to risk sharing. The MFA has been a strategic partner on all these areas of work in the past and we are grateful for their continuous support and partnership.

Through a number of areas of our work, Start Network strives for a locally led humanitarian system that is accountable to people affected by and at risk of crises. We aim to achieve this vision by making system-level shifts in how humanitarian assistance is approached and delivered.
