In June heavy rains in Chalatenango, La Paz and La Libertad territories had caused flooding, landslides, overflowing rivers, collapsed bridges and damaged homes. With this came a higher risk of disease as mosquito numbers increased. Start Network member Pro-Vida and their implementing partners Aprodehni and Cordes ran a “WASH for El Salvador” programme funded by the Start Fund to respond.
"WASH for El Salvador" is a rapid response intervention to the crisis. The intervention is based on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion (WASH) actions in which hygiene kits will be delivered to all families, health campaigns will be carried out in all communities such as Zika and Chikungunya prevention which are diseases caused by mosquitoes, food delivery to families and provision of shelter for children, pregnant women and older adults.
The purpose of this project is to provide humanitarian assistance for the pressing needs of the affected communities Chalatenango, La Paz and La Libertad territories. The vulnerable conditions these communities live in are aggravated by the occurrence of these cyclic floods.
So far the programme, which is funded by the Start Fund, has supported 610 families and enabled these agencies through the MPGR and CRGR networks to work alongside departmental, municipal and community actors. In a coordinated effort community cleaning campaigns, analysis of community water sources and fumigation activities have already been carried out.
The MPGR Organizations that have been involved in the delivery of this project are: Salvadoran Association of Humanitarian Aid (PRO VIDA), Salvadorean Foundation for Social Promotion and Economic Development (FUNSALPRODESE), Association for the Promotion of Human Rights of Children in El Salvador (APRODEHNI) And Association Foundation for Cooperation and Community Development of El Salvador (CORDES).
