Start Fund Risk Bulletin: September 2024
The Start Fund monthly risk bulletin highlights new, emerging or deteriorating situations; therefore, ongoing events that are considered to be unchanged are not featured and risks that are beyond the scope and scale of the Start Fund are also not featured. It is collated by the Start Network Anticipation and Risk Financing team using information from academia and research institutes, government departments, ACAPS, global risk indexes, risk information provided by Start Members and their partners, and the media.
The September 2024 Start Fund Risk Bulletin features:
- Risk of continued flooding and disease outbreak across West and Central Africa, following the worst flooding in 30 years in some regions.
- Declaration of a public emergency of international concern due to escalating Mpox cases and deaths in Africa, particularly in the DRC and neighboring countries.
- Escalating risk of conflict in Colombia following the end of the one year ceasefire between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the government.
- Warnings have been issued about the potential loss of access to vulnerable communities in Amazonas state as water levels in river channels are likely to drop dangerously low due to an ongoing drought disaster.
- State of emergency due to prolonged drought in Namibia threatens food security of millions of people.
- Upcoming elections in Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Mozambique against different backdrops of economic and political tensions.
