Case Study: Cyclone Seroja response in East Nusa Tenggara Province in Indonesia

Crisis Summary

A four-day period of heavy rainfall in the beginning of April 2021 resulted in flooding and landslides in several sub-districts across East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province. In addition to this, a tropical cyclone called “Seroja” hit the southern part of the province on 4th April, causing rain with moderate to heavy intensity. As of April 8th, 2021, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the disaster had affected 16 districts with a total of 168 people dead, 132 injured, 45 missing, and a total of 22,003 individuals being affected. The disaster resulted in physical damage of 11,224 houses, 220 public facilities, and 5 bridges. The needs of the affected population were non-food items (blankets, tents, mattresses, and kitchen kits), food items, WASH facilities, and medical supplies including Personal Protective Equipment to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Response

The Start Fund was alerted on April 12th, 2021, and Plan International and World Vision UK were selected to respond on the 15th April for a total amount of £249,328. World Vision UK supported affected populations in Nusa Tenggara Timur with Hygiene Kits, psychosocial support for children, clean water, and multipurpose cash assistance. World Vision UK directly reached 20,350 individuals through their response.

Plan International provided communities with handwashing stations and clean water, provided recreational kits for flood-affected children in shelters, and distributed multipurpose cash in East Nusa Tenggara Province. The total direct reach for Plan’s intervention was 9,928.
