Case Study: Forced migration from Venezuela to Colombia

Start Fund Alert 511 Colombia (displacement due to conflict) – CADENA

Crisis context

On the 21st of March 2021, violent clashes broke out in the locality of La Victoria, in the state of Apure, Venezuela. These clashes, which included bombings, home raids and extrajudicial killings, between Colombian FARC1 dissidents and the Venezuelan Armed Forces caused a forced migration of more than five thousand inhabitants, almost half of them children, to the Colombian town of Arauquita.

Response

Due to the escalating conflict, the reported needs of the displaced people included food security, shelter, WASH, NFI assistance, as well as protection against gender-based violence. After an alert to the Start Fund, on April 9th 2021, CADENA was selected to respond. CADENA provided the displaced people in Arauquita with prepared food, as well as non-food items for babies, children and women, and personal protective equipment for COVID-19.

In addition, CADENA arranged for medical referrals and arranged for doctors and psychologists to offer free consultations to anyone who required them. Including the organisation of psychological interventions and activities for the recreation and protection of children. For shelter support, CADENA supported those who required it with mats and other shelter materials.

In total, 4,434 people were directly reached by the intervention.
