The geopolitical scope of the Ukraine crisis means it will most likely have far-reaching consequences beyond the country’s borders. Start Network's approach to the Ukraine crisis is based on learning from other larger-scale crises that the Start Fund has responded to in the past.

As of 6 December 2020, Togo had 3,095 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 65 deaths. Initially, the government took steps to reduce transmission of the virus, including by closing schools. However, on 15 June, schools were reopened to allow students to take end-of-year exams.
The crisis in Syria has lasted a decade and 2020 saw some of the worst violence since the start of the conflict. As a result, there are some 2.7 million internally displaced people living in North West Syria now. Many of them live in makeshift camps, derelict buildings, or even in the open air. On 18 January, a storm hit Idlib governorate and many of these camps, as well as roads that provide access and movement, were fully or partially destroyed.
En juillet 2020,MIDEFEHOPS (Mouvement international pour les droits des enfants, des femmes et des veufs et leur promotion sociale) était l'un des huit membres nationaux et locaux sélectionnés pour participer à un fonds Covid-19 dédié, avec des réponses en RDC, en Inde et au Pakistan. À la suite de l'examen des propositions par des comités de sélection de projets composés de membres locaux, les agences ont reçu 30 000 £ pour répondre à Covid-19 dans leur zone cible. MIDEFEHOPS a utilisé ce financement pour distribuer des masques de protection et du matériel d'hygiène aux groupes vulnérables à Bunagana zone de santé de Rwanguba, RDC, ainsi que du matériel IEC (Information, Education et Communication), sous forme de dépliants et d'affiches, pour transmettre des messages comportementaux sur la façon de se protéger contre Covid- 19.
In July 2020, MIDEFEHOPS (International Movement for the Rights of Children, Women and Widowers and their Social Advancement) was awarded £30,000 to respond to COVID-19 in their target area. They used this funding to distribute masks and hygiene materials to vulnerable groups in Bunagana, Rwanguba health zone, as well as Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials, in the form of leaflets and posters, to convey behavioural messaging on how to protect against COVID-19.
Tropical Cyclone Harold, which slammed into Vanuatu’s northern provinces on 6 April 2020, proved to be almost as devastating. Hitting in the middle of a national state of emergency to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19, the response was even more challenging.
The Start Fund continues to be alerted to climate-related disasters and flooding is a particularly common hazard, with 12 flood-related alerts raised in 2020 so far. One of these alerts was raised by humanitarian agencies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo when the Mulongwe River flooded after heavy rainfall.
Across the world, we have seen a consistent rise of disease outbreaks in the past decade and Start Fund has been instrumental in responding to many of them, including Cholera, Dengue fever, Ebola, and Lassa fever. Using project data from 12 activated Start Fund alerts and post-project learning exchanges from 2018 and 2019, we’ve developed four disease-specific learning papers and seven key lessons for COVID-19.
Six years ago today, Christian Aid made the first alert to a new aid financing mechanism. The Start Fund’s first alert to food insecurity in South Sudan went on to disburse just over £300,000 to Action Against Hunger, Christian Aid, Plan International and Tearfund within three days of the alert. Originally conceived as an antidote to the limitations of the large pooled funds and traditional emergency appeals, in 2020 the Start Fund has come of age, a recognised pillar within humanitarian financial architecture and a force for transformation in its own right.
