Up to 50,000 people have been affected by a cyclone in the South Pacific islands of Tonga, damaging and destroying homes, leaving families without shelter and basic resources.

In January, the Start Fund was alerted to its 214th crisis in Burundi where there has been an influx of refugees arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Increased violence between armed groups and government forces in the DRC has forced people to flee to neighboring countries, including Burundi.

A spike in armed violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between September and December led to 30,000 people fleeing their homes while at least 10,000 people fled the country into Uganda. The UN OCHA reports that there are already 4.3 million people internally displaced in the country.

In February an armyworm outbreak led to the significant damage of maize fields across Ethiopia. The Start Fund enabled a targeted rapid response to meet farmers’ immediate needs.
