Join the Start Ready Governance Committee
At COP26 we launched Start Ready -- Start Ready is a new financing mechanism that provides communities with protection from climate risks. It is helping to shift the way that humanitarians are working from responding to crises to protecting communities ahead of their onset. Start Ready prepositions funds for crises that happen with regular and predictable patterns of recurrence like floods, droughts, and heatwaves. Once a pre-agreed threshold is met, NGOs implement contingency plans so that they can anticipate and respond early to climate risks. Start Ready pools risks and funds allowing Start Ready to stretch funding and offer greater protection to communities for less.
The Start Ready Committee TOR provides more information on the committee’s purpose and core responsibilities. The Start Ready Committee was elected in February 2022, following an open call for expressions of interest and a selection process headed by the Start Ready Governance Design Group. Members were selected in line with the requirements outlined in the Terms of Reference which were developed by the Design Group, and approved by the Start Network Board, in late 2021. The structuring and pre-positioning of Start Ready funds is done by the Start Ready Committee who meet on a bi-annual basis, the committee also agree allocations to regional parametric insurance Risk Pools such as Africa Risk Capacity (ARC) Replica.
The Start Ready Committee has regular turnover, and we are now looking for two new representatives with the following skillsets:
- A representative from a Start Network member or Hub who has experience and knowledge of anticipatory action and/or disaster risk financing. Representatives from local NGOs are particularly welcome.
