Risk Bulletin: August 2024
The Start Fund monthly risk briefing reports on new, emerging or deteriorating situations; therefore, ongoing events that are considered to be unchanged are not featured and risks that are beyond the scope and scale of the Start Fund are also not featured. It is collated by the Start Network Anticipation and Risk Financing team using information from academia and research institutes, government departments, ACAPS, global risk indexes, risk information provided by Start Members and their partners, and the media. Key risks are shared and collated each month with FOREWARN input.
The August 2024 Start Fund Risk Brief features:
- High risk of flooding across Ethiopia, Sudan, and Eritrea, linked with ongoing and forecast heavy rainfall.
- Anticipated flooding in South Sudan driven by forecast above-average rainfall and release of water from Lake Victoria in Uganda.
- Escalating risk of flooding, landslides, and disease outbreak in Yemen, linked with ongoing and forecast flash flooding.
- Warnings of an active wildfire season in Bolivia compounded by this year’s drought in the Pantanal wetlands and Amazon rainforest.
- Increased cross border displacement to Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica following the contested results of the Venezuelan elections.
- Risk of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean ahead of the peak of the season in September.
