In the second risk pool, £4.5m has been stretched to £7.3m to protect communities against droughts, floods, cyclones and heatwaves in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia, Pakistan, Philippines, Bangladesh, Madagascar and Senegal. Start Network is keen to open the opportunity for its members to support the management and implementation of the Anticipatory Action and Disaster Risk Financing Training Programme.

Communities in Senegal will receive around £330,000 GBP ($400,500 USD) from Start Network and its local partners in anticipation of the drought season in 2023. Senegal’s 17 million population relies heavily on seasonal crops.

The British Embassy in Kathmandu (BEK) has announced its continued support to anticipate and rapidly respond to crises through Start Network by providing an additional £ 1.5 million in funding to Start Fund Nepal.

Geospatial data, data visualisation and information management are critical to anticipatory action. As a trusted leader in these fields MapAction has been selected to partner with the Start Network to assist with our programmes of anticipatory and early action. 

Following the success of last year’s Start Fund COVID-19 response in Nepal, Start Network members are piloting a country-based contingency fund to respond rapidly to, and in anticipation of, small to medium scale crises in the country. Funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), this member-led trial, known as Start Fund Nepal, has been designed by local, national and international organisations. Members of the Start Fund Bangladesh team have also been supporting the design based on their experience of managing a country-based pooled fund since 2017.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) announced today that it would provide a further £12m to support the Start Fund. The funding will enable frontline actors across Start Network’s members and partners to continue to respond rapidly to and in anticipation of under-the-radar humanitarian crises. The FCDO also agreed to work with Start Network in its transition to a global network of ‘hubs’, which will facilitate locally-led responses and improve NGO access to more innovative financing that will mitigate humanitarian impacts, both protecting and assisting people affected by crises.
