G7 announcement to support pre-arranged finance necessary to saving more lives but should have gone further

Yesterday's announcement at the G7 summit included a package of support from the UK, Germany and the USA to scale up pre-arranged finance to protect the world’s most vulnerable communities against the impacts of climate change. This is a necessary step if governments are committed to saving more lives.  However, the announcement could have gone further and we are now waiting for concrete targets and a timetable around this support.

Start Fund Bangladesh leads the way on locally-led humanitarian action

In a recent Desk Review on Enhancing the Potential of Pooled Funds for Localisation (September 2020) conducted by the Grand Bargain Workstream 2 on Localisation, Start Fund Bangladesh (SFB) was held up as a strong example of locally-led humanitarian action that exemplifies some of the commitments set out in the Grand Bargain. SFB’s transformative model shows that it is possible to have a more proactive, efficient and locally-led humanitarian sector.

On 1 December 2015, a wave of heavy rains, the third in a month, hit southern India, leading to the most intense floods in living memory for communities in Chennai city and districts in northern Tamil Nadu state, killing at least 260 people, damaging infrastructure, closing hospitals and displacing an estimated 400,000 people from their homes.
